The Hothouse 

de Harold Pinter

Sub coordonarea lect. univ. dr. Laura Carasevici, studenții din anul III ai Facultăţii de Litere (secţia Engleză-Germană), din cadrul Universităţii „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” (UAIC) din Iaşi, au tradus un fragment din piesa de teatru The Hothouse / Sera de Harold Pinter. Traducerea este o premieră națională, realizată în cadrul InterDramText (proiect didactic, de creaţie şi de cercetare în domeniul traducerii şi montării textului dramatic), o colaborare între Facultatea de Litere (UAIC) şi Centrul de Cercetare „Arta Teatrului – Studiu şi Creaţie” al Facultăţii de Teatru din cadrul UNAGE Iaşi.

Harold Pinter (1930-2008), dramaturg, prozator, scenarist, regizor şi actor britanic, laureat al Premiului Nobel pentru Literatură (2005), a scris piesa de teatru Sera (The Hothouse) în 1958, la vârsta de numai 28 de ani. Deşi a fost lăsată într-un sertar timp de 22 de ani, s-a dovedit a fi „una dintre cele mai bune piese ale lui Pinter” (Michael Billington). O comedie neagră ce descrie birocratizarea abuzurilor flagrante la adresa drepturilor omului, Sera reprezintă o metaforă pentru orice spaţiu închis (poate chiar o ţară? lumea întreagă?), condus de autorităţi confuze şi depăşite de situaţie, în care proliferează absurdul, sacrificarea esenţei de dragul aparenţelor, abuzul de putere şi, în ultimă instanţă, sufocarea libertăţii spiritului uman

Under the coordination of Lecturer Laura Carasevici, PhD, third-year students of the Faculty of Letters (English-German section), at the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (UAIC), have translated an excerpt from the play The Hothouse by Harold Pinter. The translation is a national premiere, carried out within the framework of InterDramText (an educational, creative and research project in the field of translation and staging of dramatic texts), a collaboration between the Faculty of Letters (UAIC) and the Research Centre “The Art of Theatre – Study and Creation” of the Faculty of Theatre of UNAGE Iași (“George Enescu” National University of Arts).

Harold Pinter (1930-2008), British playwright, prose writer, screenwriter, director and actor, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (2005), wrote the play The Hothouse in 1958, at the age of 28. Although it was left in a drawer for 22 years, it turned out to be “one of Pinter’s best plays” (Michael Billington). A dark comedy depicting the bureaucratization of flagrant abuses of human rights, The Hothouse is a metaphor for any enclosed space (perhaps even a country? the whole world?) run by confused and out-of-touch authorities, in which the absurd, the essence sacrificed to appearances, the abuse of power and, ultimately, the stifling of the freedom of the human spirit proliferate.

The reading-performance will be followed by the debate “Challenges of translating Harold Pinter in Romania”.
