Occident Express Ro prezintă istoria recentă a unui popor ce încearcă să-și uite propriul trecut pentru a aspira la miraculosul Occident, raportându-se, însă, mereu, la rădăcinile sale. Este o poveste despre oamenii obișnuiți, un balans permanent între Occident şi Orient, între Est şi Vest.

Matei Vișniec despre Occident Express: „Pentru mulţi occidentali Europa de răsărit şi Balcanii rămân zone enigmatice, greu de scos de sub anumite etichete. Scriind Occident Express am vrut tocmai să captez, prin limbajul teatrului, unele dintre aceste carenţe comunicative şi unele dintre aceste clişee. Evident, nu puteam ocoli nici tema fascinaţiei pe care o suscită Occidentul. Până la un punct ea este justificată, dar poate duce şi la un fel de orbire. Există un efort reciproc care ar trebui făcut. Vestul ar trebui să înţeleagă mai bine ce s-a întâmplat în Europa de răsărit şi de ce «răsăritenii» sunt încă mutilaţi de cumplita experienţă comunistă impusă de Uniunea Sovietică. Şi esticii însă ar trebui să adopte nu doar forma, ci şi conţinutul democraţiei occidentale şi să lupte prin exemple personale împotriva corupţiei şi pentru prezervarea libertăţii.”

Occident Express Ro displays the recent history of a people trying to forget its past in order to aim to the miraculous West, while constantly referring back to its own roots. It presents a story about ordinary people and a permanent balance between the West and the East, between East and West.

„For many Western people, Eastern Europe and the Balkans continue to be enigmatic zones, to which is difficult to escape certain labels. When writing Occident Express I wanted to precisely point out, through the language of theatre, some of these communicative deficiencies and clichés. Obviously, I could not neglect the topic of fascination that the West incites. It is justified to a certain point, but it can also lead to a lack of perception. There is a mutual effort that must be made. The West should have a broader understanding of what happened in Eastern Europe and why are the Easterners still affected by the dreadful communist experience imposed by the Soviet Union. At the same time, people from the East should embrace not only the shape but also the substance of Western democracy. They have to fight against corruption and for the protection of freedom, through personal examples.” Matei Vișniec about Occident Express
