Matei Vișniec a rescris Cabaretul cuvintelor special pentru actorii teatrului care îi poartă numele și ne propune să pornim într-o călătorie într-un univers unde cuvintele sunt personaje adevărate cu sentimente și acțiuni proprii ce trăiesc independent de voința oamenilor. Cabaretul cuvintelor este, în esență, o celebrare a limbajului, a libertății de expresie și a puterii artei teatrale de a construi punți între oameni.
„Am conceput acest spectacol ca un omagiu adus cuvintelor întrucît ele ne conferă statut uman. Dar ştim noi să le preţuim cu adevărat? Ne îngrijim noi destul de limba noastră – principala noastră dimensiune identitară? Iată doar cîteva întrebări cu care am pornit la drum scriind o întreagă carte despre cuvinte. Mi-am imaginat că fiecare cuvînt poate fi un personaj şi poate povesti lucruri importante despre sine: cum a apărut, ce semnificaţii multiple poate îmbrăca, în ce relaţii distante sau cordiale se află cu alte cuvinte, sau cum este maltratat de unii vorbitori. Cei zece actori ai teatrului sucevean încarnează, în acest spectacol, zeci de personaje-cuvinte. Mi-am dorit un spectacol cu emoţii vizuale şi auditive, cu poezie şi umor, cu reflecţii care să se nască din prezentarea unor fabule morale şi chiar filosofice. Limba română este un tezaur identitar, dar dacă ar putea vorbi s-ar plînge de neglijenţele noastre faţă de ea. Uneori o rostim cu aproximaţie, o rănim şi o sărăcim, nu suntem atenţi la frumuseţea ei şi nici nu ne dăm seama că o cunoaştem superficial. Cabaretul cuvintelor nu este un spectacol acuzator, dar nici nu este tandru cu cei care dau exemple proaste de utilizare a limbii, cu cei care o urîţesc la radio sau la televiziune. Matei Vișniec rewrote The Cabaret of Words especially for the actors of the theater that bears his name, inviting us to embark on a journey through a universe where words are real characters with feelings and actions of their own, that exist independently of human will. Essentially, The Cabaret of Words is a celebration of language, of freedom of speech, and of the power of theatre to build bridges between people.
‘I conceived this show as a homage to words, as they provide us with our humanity. But do we actually know how to treasure them? Are we taking enough care of our language – the main pillar of our identity? These are just a few of the questions I set off to explore, and I ended up writing an entire book about words. I imagined that each word could be a character who tells important stories about itself: how it appeared, which meanings it can convey, what distant or cordial relationships it has with other words, how it gets mistreated by some speakers. The ten actors and actresses of the theatre in Suceava embody tens of word-characters in this show. I wanted a show with visual and auditory emotions, with poetry and humour, with reflections arising from the telling of some moral and even philosophical fables. Romanian language is an identity treasure, but if it could speak, it would complain about our neglect. Sometimes we speak it roughly; we hurt and impoverish it; we don’t pay attention to its beauty, and we don’t realise we know it only superficially. The Cabaret of Words is not a show that aims to accuse, but neither is it gentle with those who set a bad example in their use of language, or blemish it on the radio or on the TV.
