AN TAN TINA  EEENY MEENY MINY MOE

“Starting from Ana Blandiana’s book, “False Treaty of Manipulation”, my performance is an attempt to relate to the politically disturbing times that we are going through in Romania right now. I am afraid of what censorship meant during the Communist period. I am disgusted by fawning as a means for personal gains. I do not understand the mentality or the creed of the Communist system as regarding the humiliation of human intelligence by replacing it with hatred, stupidity and servility. What happened in December 1989 was for me an act of courage and not a manipulation of some young people by the Communist regime. And, just the same, every time I was in the Victory Square during the last two years, whenever I approached groups of people shouting: “We are not leaving!” I had the feeling that that was the group that I belonged to. I do not want to grow old thinking : “Oh, all right, they stole, but we also got something”. We are not coward as a people, I don’t want to believe that! I will not sit in a few years’ time with my daughter, listening to Radio Free Europe in secret, trembling in fear. How much of what we are living is the result of our own will and how much is manipulation?” Nicoleta Lefter

The performance “An tan tina” (“Eeeny Meeny Miny Moe”) is developed as a parallel between the manipulation system used by the Communists and the manipulation strategies of today – spreading lies on TV, lieing to the people through media.

Ana Blandiana: “Although I know all that I know about the manipulation that took place back in 1989 and that all the events during that year were meant and made to happen at world level, I shall not cease to see what happened in December as a “revolution”, because, although that was a minutely written political play, its actors in the street did not really know that they were only actors and they died for real. What has always fascinated me about politics is the manner in which its characters – the politicians – come from nothing and go back to nothing. It is as if the violently illuminated political stage is surrounded by a sea of darkness from where these grotesque beings manage to crawl up and get under the spotlights, all crammed together and fighting to stay there for as long as possible, fighting a battle of life and death, as if they can carry on only as long as they are under these lights. All sorts of insignificant beings who cannot do anything else and have never stood out through anything at all, once they break and enter onto this shiny platform start having an opinion about anything and everything there is, and their words, no matter how stupid, are taken over by a huge heap of voice recorders and then transcribed onto the front pages of newspapers. But once the spotlights go out, no one is interested in their words anymore. We are such an indolent people of the “let me be and I’ll let you be” sort, mountains collided around us, all those nomadic peoples who swept over us and all of those mighty rules of the world who attacked us – we let them all do what they wanted to do, without the least resistance, as we were either too skeptical to see the slightest chance of a victory, or too lucid to give up hope altogether. Our solution has always been rooted in indolence, in the powerlessness that generated powerlessness in its turn. We are being devoured by a corruption that has sprung from this sweet indolence, which has gone totally out of control. We are being turned into rags by the shamelessness and manipulated by the lies of a political class which was propelled by money and which is mostly made up of offenders who, between jail and Parliament, choose the latter, as that gives them immunity. Borderless humiliations born from our indolent nature, from the laziness of our lack of reaction and from our all too guilty hope that everything can be arranged.”
